Canal Lateral a la Loire – Part 5

This is the fifth part of our journey on the Canal Lateral a la Loire which takes us from Menetreol-sous-Sancerre to La Charite-sur-Loire.

Yet again the weather is being kind to us with sunshine, clear skys and little wind.  This time of year is gets cold over night with temperatures dropping close to zero degrees but reasonably warm in the day although a good hat and jacket is called for.  Perfect for exploring and walking.

We leave as soon as the locks are open for the day and while there is little boat traffic we are sharing locks for our next leg of the journey.  The land scape is amazing, meandering through the open country side with occasional tree lined sections.  it is so peaceful and time slows down to the snails pace of canal life.

Jake and his girl friend, our passage making friends have also found a mooring at Le Bourg and are heading into the town of La Charite-sur-Loire for supplies including cat food.  We also take time out to cross the river Loire to the East bank and explore the town starting with a fantastic lunch.  It is warm enough to eat outside and watch the world go by for a while.  The town holds our interest with charming streets and interesting architecture. We visit Prieuré Notre-Dame de La Charité-sur-Loire where there is access to the Benedictine gardens and the Cloisters.

We take the opportunity to stock up on some essential supplies.  Unfortunately we decided not to hire bikes so every thing has to be carried by hand and in ruck sacks.  Our boating experience up until this trip is staying at sea ports and we are accustomed to there being shops and other facilities close to our visitor moorings.  In hindsight we would have made life a little easier for ourselves if we had taken more supplies at the beginning of the trip.  While we do have emergency supplies we are take the opportunity to stock up when ever we can.

Although Le Bourg is a nice mooring with electricity and water, we decide to press on further South to our mooring for the night.  The passage is featured in my next video.

Thank you for watching….
