Canal Lateral a la Loire – Part 4

This is the fourth part of our journey on the Canal Lateral a la Loire which takes us to Menetreol-sous-Sancerre.

The passage to Menetreol-sous-Sancerre was relatively short through a combination of open country side and a tree-lined canal, with very little boat traffic.  Again we enjoyed sunshine and little wind.  By now we are starting to be old hands at the locks passing through them with ease.  We find that the lock keepers have different preferences for traversing the locks. Some insist on a line forward and  aft with engine off while others are happy with the engine left running.  My preference is to use a centre line with the engine running, in gear with a full port or starboard helm depending on the side of the line.

The video is in a combination of real time and time lapse of the passage to Menetreol-sous-Sancerre.  We found a fantastic mooring on the edge of the village where there was free water and electric.  We took the opportunity to fill our tanks with water before walking up the hill to the town of Sancerre.

We meet fellow passage makers Jake and his girl friend and their cats and a dog who have been traveling the French canals for several months in his 65 foot barge.  Jake told us tales of their adventures, their horrendous passage across the English Channel and watching cars being pulled form the canal after recent floods.  The road to Sancerre is a long walk, so Jake told us about a short cut across the vines which shortened our walk considerably and we had the pleasure of the country side.

Although there are a couple of wineries which we could have visited, we decided to explore the town of Sancerre. As it was October the town was relatively quite so we had much of the town to ourselves.  We enjoyed a lovely lunch in one of the restaurants on the edge of the main square.  After a little more exploring made our way back to our floating home to build up an appetite for dinner in the restaurant adjacent to our mooring.

Please enjoy the video.  Thank you for watching….
